Marnie is a people-pleaser, so it’s too bad for her that Hannah is her best friend, because Hannah is constitutionally impossible to please. Marnie complains about being uptight, but being uptight is not her real problem. Her real problem is that she has no idea what she wants, and she makes up for it by pretending to want a representation of success she’s collaged from magazine advertisements wherein having is equal to happiness. It’s very hard to keep up the feigning of desire for something that doesn’t exist, so Marnie comes across as uptight. If being uptight were her core problem, she’d be much better off. Marnie is painfully unfunny. She barely has a sense of humor and is only able to laugh at ironies or when tragedy befalls someone. Bonus points, though not a requirement, if it’s someone she doesn’t like. Marnie is naïve and kind of dumb, even though she doesn’t seem it, because she is tall and has a face that belongs to someone much older than her. If Marnie were 23 years old in 2023, she would be a tradwife Instagram influencer.
